Last weekend, I attended the Brahmaviharas meditation retreat organized by the teachers and friends at @agora_lisboa, where I had an opportunity to explore the Buddhist perspective on creative mind and creativity.
Creative mind
One of the dharma talks of the retreat focused on the distinction between a “creative” mind and a “reactive” mind. The reactive mind, conditioned and automatic, responds predictably to external stimuli. In contrast, the creative mind is free and spontaneous, allowing us to choose responses that foster our own and others’ well-being. This creative mindset embodies awareness, freedom from external conditions and individual choice.
While Buddhism doesn’t equate a creative mind solely with artistic expression, I see a deep connection between them in their shared qualities of inner freedom and authentic self-expression.
Buddhism teaches that we all carry an inherent potential for creativity, rooted in our “bodhicitta” or “enlightenment mind.” By cultivating a creative mind, which is present, aware and free, we can unlock spontaneous and original insights and expressions.
Other key teachings and concepts related to creativity in Buddhism:

Non-Attachment (letting go of fixed ideas and outcomes).
This openness allows creative expression to flow more freely without the constraints of judgment or expectations.

Embracing Impermanence (understanding that nothing is permanent), encourages us to take risks and explore new ideas without the fear of failure. This perspective can lead to innovative thinking and experimentation.

Interconnectedness of all things. This view can enhance creativity by fostering collaboration and drawing inspiration from a diverse range of experiences, cultures, and perspectives, enriching the creative process.

Compassion and understanding suffering.
Creativity can serve as a form of expression for personal suffering and healing, as well as relating to others’ suffering through compassion.

Cultivating Joy and Playfulness.
Buddhism recognizes the importance of joy and playfulness in life, which are essential for cultivating creativity.
